Mika Herrala is a true muscle specialist. He started his career as sport masseur and while treating his patients he learned a lot about muscles and their behavior. When massaging he ofter wondered why muscles get sore.
Mika wanted to understand the topic better and went to university to study biophysics. There he had the opportunity to research and measure muscle operation in various projects and entered deeper into world of muscles and their measurement technology.
Finally when working on his master's thesis with Pasi Tavi (currently company advisor) they made a break-through and invented a way to use frequency spectrum analysis for acquisition of maximally accurate information about muscle activation and power production.
Based on their observations they were ready to build the first prototype which could detect muscle involuntary tension (jammed muscle). Once ready the prototype and the technology worked well, but it seemed that the solution as such did not have enough demand in the market. Therefore Mika and Pasi directed their further development efforts towards muscle behavior and operation during exercising.
They created a new concept and continued technology development to be able to measure both fast and slow twitch muscle fibers and observe muscle fatigue. The unique technology and expertise developed in this work has been utilised in the new product development.
As a result of this work Mpower muscle activation monitor was born - a solution to help professionals to understand their customer's muscle operation better and to support muscle training in its various forms.
